Very few gardens will look well without a good, well maintained lawn. To achieve this is relatively easy once we take care of the basics. Make sure your mower has been sharpened (or re-newed) and start mowing your lawn early. A weekly cut will work wonders, but don’t set your mower blades too tight, for the first few cuts, give your lawn the opportunity to grow. If you need a new mower check out our range here. One of the most important things to keep your lawn looking good throughout the year is to fertilise it, and the time to start is right now. There are plenty of lawn fertilisers available in-store and online and ensure you choose one specifically designed to feed (and weed) lawns, as they need specialist fertiliser care. Use a fertiliser which is higher in nitrogen for spring use and higher in potassium in autumn, which will toughen the grass for winter. Make sure your lawn is well aerated (this can be easily done using a garden fork, or see below YouTube link for a humourous idea). Check and remove any weeds. Some fertilisers have built in weed-killers, such as Evergreen Complete which feeds lawns, kills weeds, and kills moss. An easy repair kit for your lawn is supplied by Greenline called Lawnseed Easy Repair. Always make sure to apply your fertiliser evenly as doubling up will burn the grass. Follow the instruction on your fertiliser pack and all will be well.
A good old fashioned rake before mowing will work wonders to remove any dead grass or debris that may build up between mowing, which can stop the water and other nutrients from reaching the grass roots. Lawns, just like us, get thirsty so make sure to water yours regularly. It is best to water early in the morning, or late in the evening to avoid evaporation. A good watering twice a week is best, as it will encourage a deeper root system. If you do not have a water butt/rainwater tank, now is the time to get one as you can use the water from it to avoid heavy water bills, now that water charges are coming in. These are easily fitted by a handyman in about 20 minutes or so, and can prove to be a wise investment.
A well mown lawn is the key ingredient for a fabulous garden and there is nothing better than standing back and admiring your lawn when you have finished mowing. The stripes that you see on football pitches and the likes are made by using a mower with a roller attached behind the cutting blades. Following the natural flow of your lawn at a nice steady pace, up and down, will give you this effect. Make sure not to cut your lawn too tight, and to mow it at regular intervals.
